I asked the Lord
that I might grow
In faith and love
and every grace;
Might more of His
salvation know
And seek more
earnestly His face.
T'was He who taught
me thus to pray,
And He I know has
answered prayer;
But it has been in
such a way
As almost drove me
to despair.
I hoped that in some
favored hour,
At once He'd answer
my request;
And by His love's
constraining power
Subdue my sins and
give me rest.
Instead of this, He
made me feel
The hidden evils of
my heart;
And let the angry
powers of Hell
Assault my soul in
every part.
Yes! More! With His
own hand it seemed
Intent to aggravate
my woe;
Crossed all the fair
designs I'd schemed,
Blasted my gourds,
and made me low.
"Lord! Why is
this?" I trembling cried;
"Wilt Thou
pursue Thy worm to death?"
"Tis this
way" The Lord replied
"I answer for
grace and faith."
"These inward
trials I employ
From self and pride
to see thee free
And break thy
schemes of earthly joy
That thou mayest
seek thy ALL IN ME."
John
Newton
Not to be like those facebook-adicted teens or old ladies that like every post, but I do like this quote...in fact you posted it 9 hours after I watched "Amazing Grace"
ReplyDeleteYes, I like this quote too. In an odd sense, it is very encouraging to see examples of, "No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man."(1 Cor 10:13). But of course,we want examples that lived the last part of the verse as well(as did John Newton):"God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." The ones who suffered trials and temptations, but endured them, standing fast in the faith.
ReplyDeleteThe timing of you reading this quote and watching the movie is ironic. It's interesting how God does that sometimes.
I keep posting comments and forgetting to hit the "reply" box first... :/ :)
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting to do that too :)
